I first got into the world of anime and manga back in 2006, where I started in high school, and got a new friend who was very much into it. I couldn’t help but get fascinated by the stories and the drawing style, and my friend was kind enough to share everything that she knew about it with me. Later I joined a online forum and learned about cosplay and conventions through that.
Back then, we only had one convention each year in Denmark and of course, I discovered it, about 2 weeks after it had been held in 2006. Me and my friend from school quickly decided that we would go to the one in 2007 though, and I convinced her that we had to try this cosplay-thing I had learned about.
So in November 2007, me, her and a friend I met in the online forum went to J-popcon together. Me and my school friend dressed up as Shuichi Shindo and Hiroshi Nakano from Gravitation and all 3 of us had an amazing weekend! I laughed so much that my stomach muscles hurt, when I got home. Naturally, the 3 of us quickly decided that we would go to more conventions in the future, and that’s what I’m still doing now, all these years later.
Why Cosplay?
I’ve always been a very creative person, so cosplay caught my interest from the first time I learned what it was. I loved the idea of dressing up as your favourite characters – we have all wanted to be our favourite heroes sometime in our life, haven’t we? And the fact that you had to make the outfits yourself, excited me.
I’ve also always been a quiet and rather insecure girl, but I’ve gained some confidence as I’ve gotten older, and some of it, is definitely because of cosplay. When you have to pretend to be someone other than yourself, you learn a lot about yourself and you’re forced to be more open. I’ve also met many wonderful new people through this hobby, and it always helps on your self-esteem when you know people like you and what you do.
